How can we become a member?

Membership of DOTAC is open to diaconal associations, sisterhoods and orders in North America, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America who support the purposes and objectives of DOTAC. Each group shall determine the qualifications for membership in its own organization, but members of constituent groups must be "set apart" or "designated" to serve in diaconal ministry within their own denomination or association. Groups applying for membership must present written approval of their own governing body.

Application for membership will include:

1. A brief history of the group

2. Copies of the constitution and/or other governing documents.

3. A summary of the formation/education/candidature process.

4. Statements of support for the purpose of DOTAC, why the group wishes to become a member, and what gifts the group brings to DOTAC.

Membership dues are paid yearly.

Why should we become a member?

DOTAC GIVES GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS

  • various perspectives on diaconal ministry
  • ecumenical and international links to diaconal groups
  • a network to share information of education and formation for diaconal ministry
  • common mission initiatives
  • a mutual pray day
  • a connection with others in ministries of service, justice and reconciliation

DOTAC supports projects overcoming violence. Our latest project was at LUPA - Lutheran Institution in Paracatu - Brazil.

This project (April 2002 - February 2003) was initially conceived to assist students of the Lutheran School and their families, but its influence quickly extended to other groups also involved in the activities of LUPA.

Highlights included:

  • visits to families: after a few visits it is noticed that their relationship with the school gets increasingly better;
  • breakfasts for children prior to school day;
  • psychological assistance for students as well as their mothers and fathers;
  • National Meeting Encounter of Women, with the theme “Women say No to Violence”;
  • Lecture and documentation to a group of women from the Council for Protection to Children and Adolescents;
  • A group of students from the “Olendina de Paula” primary school played a piece for our student’s mothers, emphasizing the importance for children to attend school.”

DOTAC assisted this project with a gift of $1000.00.
